Okay, so a while back, I got it into my head that I wanted to try and remake one of those fancy Prada bags. You know, the Galleria Saffiano thing? It’s a real looker, but way out of my price range. So, I thought, why not give it a shot myself?
First off, I did a little digging around online to see what these bags are all about. I found out that they’re usually made with this special “Saffiano” leather. It’s real leather, but they treat it some way to give it that special texture. And get this, they’re made in Italy, which, apparently, is a big deal when it comes to Prada, like LV bags, I mean the price. Some folks online were saying that Italy is one of the cheapest places to get these bags, so maybe I should plan a trip…haha.
But back to the bag. I found a bunch of pictures and descriptions of the Galleria, and man, it’s a good-looking bag. It’s got that classic, simple style, and you can carry it in your hand or on your arm. Real versatile, you know? And it’s got that little Prada logo on it, which is a nice touch.
Now, for the actual making of the bag, I knew I needed to get my hands on some Saffiano leather. Or at least something close to it. I went down to my local leather shop, and they had a few different options. The guy there told me that Saffiano is usually chrome-tanned, but they also had some vegetable-tanned options. I ended up going with a chrome-tanned one ’cause it seemed closer to what Prada uses. It’s not the full-grain leather but it’s also called genuine leather. I thought about it for a second because I know some people think these bags can’t hold their value, unlike some other stuff, but I decided to go for it.
Then came the cutting and the stitching. I’m no expert, but I’ve done a bit of leatherwork before, so I figured I could handle it. I found a pattern online that was pretty close to the Galleria, and I used that as a guide. It took a lot of time, and a lot of patience, but slowly but surely, the bag started to come together.
I even managed to find a little metal Prada logo online, which I attached to the front of the bag. It’s not the real deal, but it adds a nice little touch, don’t you think?
So, after all that work, I finally had my very own “Galleria” bag. It’s not perfect, and it’s definitely not a real Prada, but I’m pretty proud of it. And you know what? It didn’t cost me an arm and a leg, which is a big win in my book. Also, I didn’t see anyone mention that Saffiano doesn’t develop a patina over time. I saw some guys mention DHGate. I will check it.
- Step 1: I started by researching the Prada Galleria Saffiano bag online.
- Step 2: I sourced some Saffiano-like leather from a local shop.
- Step 3: I found a similar pattern and started cutting and stitching the leather.
- Step 4: I added a replica Prada logo to the finished bag.
Final Thoughts
It was a fun project, and it taught me a lot about leatherwork and bag making. Maybe I’ll try to remake another designer bag sometime. Or maybe I’ll just save up and buy the real thing. Who knows?
It is well made, right? I should try it in rotation with my other work totes. I also saw some tags about this bag, like “shop style”, “special edition”, “classic”, “reversible”, etc. Maybe I can use these tags somewhere to show off my bag. But don’t get me wrong, I am not going to use this fake bag for money.
What do you guys think? Have any of you ever tried to remake a designer item? Let me know in the comments!
